Did you know the average person inhales six to eight liters per minute? At this rate, we inhale nearly 11,000 liters of air per day. Compared to water consumption, which is three to four liters per person per day, the difference is dramatic.
Why is this important
Think about how much time we spend inside breathing filtered, recycled air - more than 90% of our time every day.
Significant legislation, regulation, policy and laws govern our use of water; yet, NO enforceable regulations or laws protect human health regarding the 11,000 liters of air each one of us consume on a daily basis.
It’s time for a paradigm shift…
In 2021, the National Science Foundation awarded Arizona State University along with five partner universities a one-year engineering research center planning grant for academia and industry partners to join forces for an initiative to form a dedicated research center focused on the creation of breathing buildings.

Through innovative approaches in science and engineering, we will Detect, Collect and Convert harmful contaminants in the air we breathe in our indoor environment.
